Transport emissions quantification and reporting

In July 2023 the European Commission issued a proposal to create a new EU Regulation that drastically how the greenhouse gas emissions of transport services are accounted for. If approved by the European Parliament and European Council, the new regulation will be a major step forward to reduce the emissions caused by transport services for passengers and freight in Europe.

What the Commission proposes is to establish a common framework to calculate and report transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. Quoting from the proposal’s Impact Assessment report:

Currently, there is a wide range of standards, methods, calculation tools and databases of default emission values available both in the EU and internationally. These different tools produce uneven and incomparable data on GHG emissions that create confusion, both for industry and for individuals, hampering users’ ability to make informed transport choices and business decisions.

In addition, transport service organisers and operators lack sufficient incentives to calculate and disclose information on the GHG emissions of their services, and users lack accurate information. This is due to the reluctance to reveal commercially sensitive information, the perceived complexity and costs of quantifying GHG emissions data at transport service level, and the lack of trust in the emissions figures shared on the market.

There are exactly the reasons why we are developing CO2Path – a data platform that enables dependable measurement and reporting of logistics emissions. Through a decentralized carbon accounting model CO2Path enables the creation of trustable emissions data value chains without sacrificing data sovereignty and business confidentiality. At the same time, CO2Path creates financial incentives for data sharing and the creation of emissions data value chains.

CO2Path is supported by REACH- The Next Generation Data Incubator, which supports startups aspiring to break down data silos for the benefit of everyone.
